implantsAn implant is a permanent replacement of a missing tooth with an artificial tooth. Unlike a crown an implant also replaces the roots of a tooth. Implants are the most durable option for whole tooth replacement. There are two elements to an implant: a metal, usually titanium post that serves as an artificial root, and a crown which is attached to the post.

A pilot hole is drilled into the jaw to receive the post which is then screwed into the bone. Through a process called osseointegration, the bone regenerates around the post and creates a very secure anchor to receive the crown. The process of osseointegration can take from 3 to 5 months. Initially a cover screw is attached over the post to protect the site while healing occurs. After a few months, when healing is sufficient, a temporary crown is placed. And finally, after the gums have shaped themselves around the temporary crown, the final, permanent crown is attached and the process is complete.

Your dentist will be happy to discuss with you the best strategy for tooth replacement.
