Traditional amalgam fillings are often referred to as silver fillings. There is silver in the amalgam but many are surprised to learn that amalgam can contain over 50% mercury. The American Dental Association currently asserts that mercury derived from amalgam fillings is not present in sufficient quantity to cause harm to humans. But the more we learn of the toxic effects of mercury, the lower the limits of acceptable exposure are set.
